TODAY IS MS ACTION DAY--AND YOU CAN PARTICIPATE!

MS advocacy volunteers and staff will be in Springfield for MS Action Day 2012 today meeting with state legislators to discuss legislation and other issues that will benefit the more than 20,000 Illinoisans with MS and their families. In order to make sure our MS advocacy efforts are as effective as possible, we want everyone to take part in this exciting day!

ABOUT THESE BILLS:

Gas Station Refueling Accessibility (HB3878/SB1238): We are advocating for passage of an amendment to the Illinois Motor Fuel Sales Act which gives people with disabilities greater access at gasoline service stations in the community. The existing law provides refueling assistance at gas stations and service stations upon the request of an individual with a disability by honking or signaling an employee. However, service to people needing assistance still becomes a challenge especially when they are not being heard or seen by the service station employee and the existing service station button is unreachable. The amendment we are seeking will require service station to add a calling device or post a phone number on the gas pumps to make it easier for people with disabilities to let service station staff know they need refueling assistance.

Safe Patient Handling in Nursing Homes (HB5655/SB680): We are advocating for passage of an amendment to the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act that will reduce risk of injury to patients with mobility disabilities and health care workers associated with lifting, transferring, repositioning or movement. The amendment we are seeking will give residents with disabilities in nursing homes more input on the way they are lifted and/or transferred by direct health care workers, maintaining dignity, self-determination and choice. Nursing homes will also be able to adopt policies to control risk of injuries to both residents and health care workers through evaluation, training and implementation of a "safe lifting team."
