MS ACTION DAY 2012 UPDATE: GREAT NEWS!

The National MS Society – Illinois Public Policy Network would like to thank you for your participation in our annual MS Action Day. On Wednesday, March 28, activists from the state of Illinois gathered in Springfield to meet with legislators and ask for their support of our two priority issues. Whether you joined us in Springfield or participated virtually, your personal connections and stories truly made a difference. We have already witnessed a positive impact!

Safe Patient Handling in Nursing Homes (SB680/HB5655)

  • Sen. Linda Holmes
  • Sen. Maggie Crotty
  • Sen. Iris Y. Martinez
  • Sen. Kirk W. Dillard
  • Rep. Sidney Mathias

Gas Station Refueling Accessibility (HB4866 House Floor Amendment No. 1, formerly HB3878)
The Gas Station Refueling Accessibiliy bill number has been changed to HB4866 House Floor Amendment No. 1 from HB3878, and is now sponsored by Rep. Sidney Mathias. This bill supports passage of the amendment to the Motor Fuel Sales Act which gives people with disabilities greater access at gasoline service stations within the community. Because the bill now has a new number, we need you to contact you representatives and alert them of this change. Please use the Action Alert link below to contact your representative today to inform them of the change in bill number and ask for their continued support.

  • TAKE ACTION NOW for Gas Station Refueling Accessibility (HB4866 House Floor Amendment No. 1, formerly HB3878): Please click the Action Alert link below to send an email and/or fax to your state legislators asking them to co-sponsor and continue their support for this important bill. Click Here for the HB4866 House Floor Amendment No. 1 Action Alert>>

ABOUT THIS BILL:

Gas Station Refueling Accessibility (HB4866 House Floor Amendment No. 1, formerly HB3878): We are advocating for passage of an amendment to the Illinois Motor Fuel Sales Act which gives people with disabilities greater access at gasoline service stations in the community. The existing law provides refueling assistance at gas stations and service stations upon the request of an individual with a disability by honking or signaling an employee. However, service to people needing assistance still becomes a challenge especially when they are not being heard or seen by the service station employee and the existing service station button is unreachable. The amendment we are seeking will require service station to add a calling device or post a phone number on the gas pumps to make it easier for people with disabilities to let service station staff know they need refueling assistance.

Again, the Illinois Public Policy Network sincerely appreciates each and every one of you for your participation in our advocacy efforts! If you have any questions, please contact Anne Chavez at anne.chavez@nmss.org.
