Dear MS activist

In March, you participated in advocacy efforts through contacting your legislators during MS Action Day. Thank you for your support.

We now have updates and action items for you regarding our two current legislative issues:

  • to improve gas station accessibility; and
  • to improve safe patient handling in hospitals.

Update on SB1238 (Improve Gas Station Accessibility)

SB 1238 is now in the Assignments Committee, which means it is in discussion among legislators. (To view information about the current law, click here.)  While it is currently under consideration, we need your help to further this cause along through non-legislative means. We are asking you to help us by doing one or all of the following:

  • Write a letter to your local gas station about your challenges in receiving service as a person living with a mobility disability, and send us a copy so we also have it on file. (Click here for a sample letter in Word format to fill-in-the-blanks with your own story.)

    • Send the same letter to your legislators to tell them why access to gas stations is important not only to you but other people with mobility disabilities.

  • Contact the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association to voice your complaint. You can contact:
    • Bill Fleischli, Executive Vice President
      Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association
112 West Cook Street, Springfield, IL 62704
      Phone: 217-544-4609 Ext. 1011
  • Contact the U.S. Department of Justice and the Disability Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General's Office to voice your complaints:
  • Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about why it’s important for gas stations to improve accessibility by posting a phone number on the pumps to call for help.

Update on SB1577/HB1684 (Improve Safe Patient Handling in Hospitals)

SB1577/HB1684 successfully passed both the House and Senate by a unanimous vote! (To see the voting record, click here.) Please thank your Senator and Representative for their support! In July, we will ask Governor Pat Quinn to sign the bill into law so that over 20,000 people living with MS and thousands more with mobility disabilities will be ensured safe practices of being moved or lifted while in a hospital.
