 In this season of thanks and giving, John shares a few thoughts of appreciation, some ideas on how to stay engaged during the holidays and his own resolution for the coming year.

Sylvia Lawry founded the Society in 1946, hoping to cure her brother Bernard’s MS. While the cure eluded her, Lawry’s legacy is a national movement that aggressively funds research, advocates for change, and provides programs and services that help all Americans affected by MS. You can be part of that legacy.

11 Volunteers Recognized for Service to Chapter

Volunteer of the year Carolyn Keith, diagnosed in 1993, has been fundraising for the Society since 2000, Walking the “three days, 50 miles” Twin Cities Challenge Walk since 2002 and volunteering for the Greater Illinois Chapter for more than seven years. Carolyn and 11 other volunteers were honored last month at the chapter’s Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony.

Run to Stop MS Raised $44K
Outfitted in orange tank tops, 41 participants running for MS in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last month raised over $44,000 as part of the chapter’s first Run to Stop MS (“Run MS”) push. Additionally, four independent Run MS team members participated via other races this year, including the Chicago Triathlon and the Berlin Marathon, raising more than $4,000.

Small Town H.S. Comes Up Big for MS For the teens in one Illinois town, homecoming is about much more than a big football game or the social events that surround it. The fall celebration presents an opportunity to do good while having fun. The 250 students at Abingdon High School in Abingdon, Ill. -- population 3,612, about 50 miles west of Peoria -- selected the Greater Illinois Chapter as one of four 2010 beneficiaries...

New Law, Special Month Promote Parking Accessibility in Illinois With snow on the way and shoppers getting ready for the pre-holiday rush, November -- now designated “Accessible Parking Awareness Month” in Illinois -- is the perfect time to announce a new law (Public Act 096-1125) that will strengthen penalties to property owners who fail to keep their accessible parking aisles and spaces clear. The law takes effect January 1, 2011.

Bev Johnson Wants a Cure for MS; She's Willing to Walk for it Because she’s been an outstanding champion and Walk MS fundraiser for years, Beverly Johnson has been selected to represent the Greater Illinois Chapter on the Society’s Fundraising Goal Steering Committee. She believes that continuing research will lead to a cure and her impressive fundraising helps the Society continue funding important research until we can end MS forever.

'Real Housewife' Rocks Chicago On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, Multiple Solutions, the Greater Illinois Chapter's junior board and auxiliary, hosted its 7th annual MS Cocktailin’ for the Cause charity benefit at Chicago’s Hard Rock Hotel. The more than 300 attendees included Real Housewife of D.C. Michaele Salahi, who has lived with MS for over 17 years. Cocktailin’ 2010 raised over $40,000 to help fund MS research, programs and services.
Congratulations to New Officers Meanwhile, new Multiple Solutions co-presidents have been named, supplementing a full slate of officers. Effective October 1, Jessica Freiburg and Theresa DelVecchio are co-presidents. Also, Alex Grace was reconfirmed as MS Slugfest chair, a role he previously co-chaired with Freiburg.

Research Symposium Keynote on Vitamin D More than 450 people attended the chapter's Research Symposium October 16 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare to learn about the latest research in multiple sclerosis. The keynote address, by Colleen Hayes, Ph.D., focused on vitamin D3 as a possible MS inhibitor.
